Kurunegala ist die Hauptstadt der Nordwestprovinz und auch des Distrikts Kurunegala. Kurunegala ist 94 km von Colombo und 42 km von Kandy entfernt und hat etwa 30.000 Einwohner. Der Buddhismus ist in Kurunegala am weitesten verbreitet. Neben dem Buddhismus sind viele weitere Religionen in der Stadt beheimatet, wie etwa der Hinduismus, der Islam und das Christentum.
